About us...

Our little smokehouse in Suffolk:

We (husband and wife, Tim and Gill) run and own a small multi award-winning smokehouse producing a delicious range of smoked foods and beautiful hampers. We are based in a small rural village called Falkenham, just 5 miles from the beautiful East Suffolk Coast.

Tim has a great passion for all things food, so many years ago Gill brought him a semi-professional smoker. Little did she realise that this would completely change both their lifes. After much experimentation, several expensive mistakes and a number of smokers, Tim's hobby turned into a business and in 2010 we opened the doors to The Artisan Smokehouse.

Award-winning

A lot of hard work followed, but has resulted in us winning many national and regional awards, and critical acclaim. These have included many Great Taste Awards, British Foodies Meat Champion, Suffolk Food & Drink Awards Pride of Suffolk, Taste of Excellence Pig & Poultry Awards, along with the odd 'Best in Show' rosette here and there!

Our ethos:

We pride ourselves on the quality of ingredients we use and are dedicated to using ethically sourced products, prioritising local British producers. The quality of our smoked products are dependent upon the care and attention that we take at every stage, from sourcing the raw products, through preparation and smoking, to packaging and delivery.

All our smoked meats and fish are traditionally dry cured using no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Unusually, we use maple wood to smoke our products, which we feel gives a more delicate flavour. For more information on the smoking process, please click here.

We also always try to minimise our impact on the environment, especially with regard to single use plastic. Therefore our parcels and hampers are delivered in cardboard packaging using paper parcel tape. Our void fill will either be craft or shredded paper, occasionally, biodegradable chips, or sustainable PEFC approved wood wool in the case of our hampers. If we can and if appropriate we will also try to reuse packaging, although this is not case for our hamper boxes which are always brand new!

Our business today:

Our business has grown a little since the early days and is now based around our online shop and creating luxury hampers for individuals and businesses, ranging from small independents to large multi-nationals.

In 2014 it became very apparent that we had outgrown our current premises and needed to expand our business. So in the first quarter of 2015 our new barn started to take shape.

A lot of blood, sweat and tears followed and finally in late 2016 our new barn opened, housing a new commercial kitchen, our smokehouse, a large stock room, along with a small deli and licensed cafe.

Unfortunately, with the arrival of Covid in 2020, we were forced to close our cafe. However, we were very fortunate that during this time, the online side of our business boomed and we spent the following months delivering food parcels and hampers both locally and nationally. During this time it became clear to us that the online side of our business is where we wanted to focus our attention, so made the difficult decision to not re-open our cafe (although never say never)!

So here we are today, a much smaller team, but happily smoking food and packing hampers in our little barn!
